Pele Prints trip: March 31-April 4, 2014!
Super exciting news, my friends: I have been invited to visit Pele Prints studio in St. Louis this Spring to create a series of prints. I am so honored to be asked by Pele, since they only work with a few artists each year. What does this mean exactly? Well, I will be working with the staff there to create a series of prints based on my drawings on paper. Amanda Verbeck is Pele’s founder and a master printer, and she and I have been working together to make this happen for many months now, and it’s finally right around the corner!
This whole prospect has been possibly one of the most exciting and terrifying projects I have taken on in my career as an artist! Exciting because of all the inherent possibilities the printmaking process holds, and terrifying because…well, basically because of the unknown. Save for one class I took in college eons ago, I have very little printmaking experience, and I've never done photolithography, which is the process we'll be using to create the prints. And so I had a million questions from the beginning (all of which Amanda answered with great patience) and lots of questioning and self-doubt along the way as I prepared the images. But I think I’m in good shape now, and my fear and lack of confidence has dissolved and been replaced with excitement and anticipation. I’ll admit it was tough for me to give up having complete control of my work, not knowing what the final image is going to be, and possibly not being in 100% control of what the outcome will be. But it’s also really exciting, and opens up so many possibilities with my work, and will allow me to do things that would be incredibly labor-intensive if they were done solely by hand.
So stay tuned here, on my Facebook page, Instagram and Twitter, as I will be posting lots of in-process pictures, and of course the final products, when I’m in St. Louis from March 31-April 4!
