Exquisite Beasts and Radiant Creatures

I'm very pleased to tell you about my solo show, Exquisite Beasts and Radiant Creatures, opening this Friday, August 9th, at Walker Contemporary in Waitsfield, VT.  Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, I will not be able to be at the opening reception, but..we're hoping to do a closing reception later this month, and I will post about that when I have more info.

The work in this show consists of small-scale works on paper, depicting single insects or mandala-like formations of insects.  I have used insects in my work in the past, and I became really interested in their shapes and the patterns they create.  So I decided to do this series of studies of individual creatures.  The ironic thing is, I hate bugs.  I'm a total wimp when I encounter anything with 6 or 8 legs, and I still have nightmares about the giant cockroaches I shared a living space with when I lived in NYC for graduate school.  So maybe this is my way of confronting that fear, or maybe I'm just covering them in gold so they can't climb on my bed and murder me in my sleep (because that's what bugs do, ya know).  The truth is, as much as I loathe these things, they are really beautiful and fascinating and deserve our attention and reverence.  Just as long as they don't come anywhere near me.
